#HappyHourClub 16 / American Legion Classic: Rum + Coke
Happy American Legion Day! This classic cocktail of rum and coke is in honor of my Granny J—the proudest American I knew. While growing up, I would tag along with her to the American Legion, where she volunteered and spent time with her friends. It was also the place that introduced me to beef jerky, Shirley Temples and amazing storytellers. Yes, the American Legion had a bar and yes, I would sit there spinning around on in my bar stool having a great time. But the American Legion was way more than just a bar to this poppy girl. It was (and still is) a community that instilled in me great American values, an appreciation for potlucks and dances but above all, the importance of friendship and supporting our Veterans. Let's salute those amazing men and women who keep the American Legion strong with a cheers.
Rum and Coke, an all American classic cocktail and one of my granny’s favorite drinks definitely had to be on the cocktail hit list for this 30 days of #HappyHourClub. Before we dive into the recipe, here’s a little back story. During the summers I would spend a great deal of time with my Granny J. It was the 80s and my mother was working hard to give me a beautiful life. Things were simpler. My world revolved around Care Bears, Pound Puppies and pretending to be Mary Poppins (what else would you do with an umbrella in Arizona?). Granny would take me along to her meetings at the American Legion for community building activities like dances, potlucks and poppy program planning. While she did that, I was busy trying to score extra cherries in my Shirley Temples and more beef jerky to snack on. Oh, how I miss the good old days! Enough of my reminiscing, let’s get to this cocktail:
#HappyHourClub Cocktail: Rum + Coke
Ingredients:
- 8 oz of Classic Coke (go for the glass bottle)
- 4 oz of rum (I used Kraken Rum)
- Ice
Serve in an old fashion glass over ice. Garnish with plenty of cherries and beef jerky if you know what’s good for you.
