welcome

to the colorful journal of Marissa Berrini, creative director, artist and curator living in Los Angeles. Launched in 2010, Marissa's online journal tells of adventures with her husband Sam, their fur kids, the occasional cocktail creation and lots of conversations with inspiring people. This blog serves to celebrate tiny victories, inspiration for those times you're stuck in a rut and bring together a community that wants more than a perfectly curated feed of eye candy. Sometimes you just got to throw it out there and see where it goes!

week 06.17.16

week 06.17.16

The last week in LA has been gloomy, which fits the sadness felt across the world with the tragedies that happened in Florida this past week – so much loss, it is hard to not feel the pain. In response to everything that has happened, there has been a tremendous amount of love being shared. Props to social media, as I've seen so many beautiful tributes like LA's artist, Dallas Clayton, who took to the streets with his colorful chalk and simple messages of love. Luckily enough to stumble upon one myself while leaving Dinosaur coffee on Monday, I couldn't help but cry–not because of fear but because of a heavy heart seeing the world in pain. Needless to say that I haven't been myself this week, as I've been lost in thought and over analyzing on if I'm spending my time wisely with those I love, as well as those I haven't spoken to in ages. Hoping that this rain cloud lifts, I've kept in mind the advice below to help move forward. This weekend will be well spent with Sam and the fur kids in celebration of Father's Day and the summer solstice. Hopefully yours will be too.

ADVICE:
Albus Dumblerdorf said, “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, when one only remembers to turn on the light.”

TECH:
Thanks to Moo, I completely obsessed with Prynt, a company that has brought the magic of Harry Potter moving pictures to life! Wait, WHAT? Yes, with inkless printing technology this compact digital printer case for your phone which allows you to print a Polaroid-like photo. The magic happens when you or your friends hover over the photo and see the moment in a quick video. Talk about a cool gift for you or someone special. Sign me up please!!!

NOT COOL:
Recently on instagram, there's been a ton of posts featuring Seven Magic Mountains, an art installation located near Las Vegas. Sadly this week, I stumbled upon the news that vandals defaced the beautiful art piece by Ugo Rondinone. Most likely this has been corrected but wanted to share as it's easy to forget how curated instagram life can be and how we need to appreciate public art as it's vulnerable to those that just don't get it.

COOL:
Look who got a makeover...Lucky Peach! Love this magazine, it's always inspiring with unique stories and the print version's design layout is beyond amazing. Now their online version can compete. ;)

INSPIRING:
British artist Benjamin Shine sure has chosen an interesting medium to work his art. Who knew ironing tulle could be so gorgeous? The dimension and craft of these fiber pieces come to life when you see the video below. Watch and hear his story here. PS: Thanks KC Cooper Sears for sharing with me!

Interview and studio footage showing the development of the tulle works from detailed portraits to abstract flows and installations.
